Farmer Giles of Ham - J. R. R. Tolkien - Audio Book

Farmer Giles of Ham - J. R. R. Tolkien : Farmer Giles of Ham is one of Tolkien’s most popular stories, full of wit and humour, set in the days when giants and dragons walked the earth. He did not look like a hero. He was fat and red-bearded and enjoyed a slow, comfortable life.

Then one day a rather deaf and short-sighted giant blundered on to his land. More by luck than skill, Farmer Giles managed to scare him away. The people of the village cheered: Farmer Giles was a hero.

A beautiful story which will please not only children but adults too.

Just So Stories - Rudyard Kipling - Audio Book

Just So Stories - Rudyard Kipling : 'I am the cat who walks by himself and all places are alike to me' !

Here are the delightful stories which Kipling first told his own children before setting them down on paper. How the Camel got his Hump, How the Leopard got his spots, How the Elephant got his Trunk, The Butterfly that Stamped and many Others. They remain popular, entertaining every generation, partly because of the story and partly because of the vivid way they are written. To hear them unabridged as they are here is to enjoy them in their original form.

Rudyard Kipling : all my childhood ! Listening to this audio book is to go back where time had no meaning, no sense and the pleasure intense.

Leon and the Spitting Image - Allen Kurzweil - Audio Book

Leon and the Spitting Image - Allen Kurzweil : Leon and the Spitting Image is about a hotel full of animals. It's about an evil ice maker. It's about glass eyeballs and human catapults.
It's about really old panty hose and Possibly Fake Hair.

But mostly it's about Leon Zeisel and his epic quest to survive fourth grade. What's stopping him? Two things. First, there's Miss Hagmeyer. She's a supernaturally strict teacher with ears that resemble giant rotting mushrooms. And then there is Leon's archenemy, Lumpkin the Pumpkin, a human tank with a deadly dodgeball throw known to all as the sidewinder.

If you want to go back to your childhood and revive your memories this audio book is exactly for you.

Gatty's Tale - Kevin Crossley-Holland - Audio Book

Gatty's Tale - Kevin Crossley-Holland : In the year 1203, nine companions set out on a great pilgrimage. The journey on foot, on horseback and by sea is fraught with danger. Not all of them will come home.

Among them is Gatty, whose whole life has been spent working in the fields. Bright, eager and resolute, with the singing voice of an angel, she is at the heart of this enthralling novel that sweeps across Europe towards Jerusalem. We come to know the pilgrims intimately their bickering, praying and joking, their fear and exhaustion, their loyalty and sacrifice as they face thieves and storms and precipices, a vicious attack and a heartbreaking bereavement.

It is a very beautiful novel extremely well adapted for this audio book explaining the medieval world and all that this word imply.

Through the Looking Glass - Lewis Carroll - Audio Book

Through the Looking Glass - Lewis Carroll : Alice is back in her room, stroking her cats - but not for long. Slipping through the Looking-Glass she meets another wild collection of fantasy characters including the Red and White Kings and Queens, Tweedledum and Tweedledee and is entertained by the poems Jabberwocky and The Walrus and the Carpenter.

Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There the sequel to Alice in Wonderland
- is in some ways more ambitious and more consciously organized than its predecessor. Unlike most sequels, it is at least as good as the original work. As the title suggests, the fantasy world involves reversal or inversion through reflection, and also includes a more-or-less possible game of chess in which the characters themselves are players. Alice does not dream her way into the story, but instead gains access through the power of her imagination, melting, through the looking glass into that world which is always at least partly visible in it.

Carroll introduces in this second story a character more sympathetic than any in 'Wonderland' and it is, as one listen to this audio book, as full of fantasy as in Alice in Wonderland. Just give it a try.

Peter Pan - James Barrie - Audio Book

Peter Pan - James Barrie : The three Darling children visit Never-Never Land with Peter Pan,
the boy who will never grow up. Peter Pan is the male hero of the novel. He is a beautiful boy who still has all his first teeth; he wears clothes made of leaves, cobwebs, and the juices that run from trees.

Peter Pan hates all adults, particularly women because he believes he was forgotten by his birth mother. Peter is extremely cocky and he often steals ideas from other children and friends. Peter is the only boy who can fly without the help of fairy dust.

What else to say ? If you are like me, and sometimes like to go back to your childhood, close your eyes and just listen. It works wonders.
